Abstract

1364258 Chloroether DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 30 July 1971 [1 Aug 1970] 36091/71 Heading C2C 2,2 - Dichloroethyl - methyl - ether is prepared by (a) reaction of 2,2-dichloroethanol with methanol in the presence of sulphuric acid or, (b) reaction of vinyl chloride with a stoiehiometric amount of chlorine in the presence of an excess of methanol. Chloroacetaldehyde dimethyl acetal is obtained as a co-product in process (b) above. 1,1,2-Trichloroethane is obtained as a coproduct in process (b) above. It may be converted to vinylidene chloride by treatment with sodium hydroxide.
