Abstract

1,233,969. Preparation of p - methylsulphonylbenzaldehyde. SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 17 July, 1969, No. 36109/69. Heading C2C. p - Methylsulphonylbenzaldehyde is prepared by contacting p - methylsulphonylbenzilidene bromide with water. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of an acid (e.g. H 2 SO 4 , Hal, HNO 3 ) or an alkali at a temperature of 30‹ to 100‹ C. The invention also comprises pmethylsulphonylbenzylidene bromide which is prepared by contacting dried bromine with ptolyl sulphone.
