Anthraquinone 1,5-disulphonic acid is prepared by heating anthraquinone 1,8-disulphonic acid or an alkali metal salt thereof with anhydrous sulphuric acid in the presence of a mercuric salt as catalyst, e.g. mercury sulphate. The corresponding alkali metal salt may be obtained by diluting the reaction product and adding an alkali metal salt.
