Abstract
327,526. Imray, O. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Feb. 27, 1929. Samples furnished. Aralkyl benzanthrones are obtained by condensing a benzanthrone, unsubstituted in the Bz-1- position, with a substituted or unsubstituted benzyl halide, in presence of a diluent, and a hydrogen-halide-eliminating catalyst, or with a psubstituted benzyl alcohol, in presence of an agent promoting the elimination of water. In examples, benzanthrone reacts with (1) benzyl chloride and copper powder, (2) p-nitro-benzyl alcohol and concentrated sulphuric acid, (3) 3-nitro-4-methoxybenzyl chloride and copper powder, and (4) 4 :8- dichlorobenzanthrone reacts with benzyl chloride, to give the corresponding Bz.-1-aralkyl benzanthrones. 4 : 8-Dichlorobenzanthrone is obtained by the action of glycerol on 1 :5-dichloroanthraquinone in presence of sulphuric acid and a reducing agent.
