Abstract
Sulphur trioxide is stabilized as the a form by mixing with the liquid trioxide 0.1-1 per cent of neutral methyl sulphate. Where the sulphur trioxide is being continuously produced, the methyl sulphate may be continuously added, or the sulphur trioxide may be distilled on to the methyl sulphate. Alternatively the methyl sulphate may be produced in situ by introducing an inorganic substance, e.g. di-methyl ether, which will form methyl sulphate by reaction with the sulphuric anhydride.
