1291739 Separating norbornenes from nortricyclenes SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 8 May 1970 [16 May 1969] 22483/70 Heading C5E [Also in Division C2] A 5-alkylidene-2-norbornene or 5-alkenyl-2- norbornene are isolated from a mixture with a 1-alkenyl nortricyclene of the formula where R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or alkyl of 1-8 carbon atoms by reacting the mixture with a compound of the formula R<SP>2</SP>OH, where R<SP>2</SP> is hydrogen or alkyl or acyl of 1-6 carbon atoms, in the presence of, as catalyst, palladium on charcoal, an inorganic acid, an aqueous solution of an inorganic acid or an organic sulphonic acid, wherein the nortricyclene reacts to form a compound of the formula and the unreacted norbornene can be separated therefrom.
