Abstract

1500329 Purification of acetonitrile CARLESS CAPELL & LEONARD Ltd 23 Aug 1976 [29 Sept 1975] 39789/75 Heading C2C Acetonitrile containing allyl alcohol as an impurity is purified by reacting the allyl alcohol with chlorine or bromine. When chlorine is used it may be in the gaseous form or it may be generated in situ, e.g. from bleaching powder. Prior to reaction with chlorine or bromine, any hydrogen cyanide present may be converted to a non-volatile compound, e.g. by reaction with sodium hydroxide and ferrous sulphate. Any acrylonitrile present in the acetonitrile may be removed by reaction with methanol under alkaline conditions.
