Abstract

H2 and O2 are combined as water in gas streams containing water vapour or steam by contacting the gas stream with nickel or a platinum group metal catalyst on a silicaalumina carrier of surface area in excess of 30 sq. m./grm. The silica content should be at least 4% wt. and the catalyst metal, e.g. Pt, Pd, Ir, Rh, Os, Ru, or mixtures, say Pt and Rh, may be 0.1-5%. The temperature must be above the dew point usually 100-800 DEG C. with pressures from subatmospheric to super-critical and gas space velocities of 10-50,000 v/v/hr. The H2 and O2 concentrations should be below the explosive limit and the process is applicable to streams derived from nuclear reactors.
