Abstract
Hydrogen cyanide is produced by reacting ammonia, natural gas, and air or oxygen in the vapour phase with hydrogen in an amount from 1.5 to 50, preferably 2-30, i.e. 10-25 mole per cent based on the natural gas over a platinum metal or platinum alloy catalyst, e.g. at 500-1300 DEG C., preferably 900-1200 DEG C., the mole ratio of ammonia to natural gas being 0.7:1 to 0.9:1 and that of natural gas to air 1:5 to 1:6. Suitable catalysts are those containing platinum, or platinum in conjunction with another metal such as iridium, palladium or rhodium, e.g. 80-90% platinum to 20-10% rhodium gauze. The process may be carried out at any pressure. Contact time may be 0.001 to 0.002 sec.
