Abstract

A nitrogen atmosphere for metallurgical operations, which may contain a proportion of hydrogen is obtained by passing nitrogen from an air liquifaction or fractionation plant containing up to 5 per cent by volume of oxygen, together with up to 18 per cent by volume of a hydrogen-containing gas obtained from cracking ammonia in the substantial absence of oxygen, over a reduction catalyst at elevated temperature whereby the free oxygen is converted to water vapour which may be removed. Reduction catalysts specified are platinum, a gauze of an iron alloy containing 18 per cent of chromium, 8 per cent nickel and 1 per cent each of tungsten and vanadium, or copper or palladium gauze, employed for example at 600 DEG C. The hydrogen-containing gas is preferably prepared by passage of ammonia at elevated temperature over a catalyst comprising fused iron oxide promoted by alumina and magnesia as in Specification 462,531.
