Abstract
1325172 Water gas shift process ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 30 Oct 1970 [10 Nov 1969] 51705/70 Heading C5E Gas mixtures containing CO and steam are converted to CO 2 and H 2 by passage over two catalysts in series. The first catalyst is a conventional high-temperature conversion catalyst, e.g. chromia-promoted ferric oxide, and the temperature of this stage is in the range 600‹ to 1000‹ F. The second catalyst comprises at least one alkali metal compound derived from an acid having an ionization constant less than 1 x 10<SP>-3</SP>, and a component consisting of one at least of the elements of Group Vb, VIb, or VIII of the Periodic Table, the weight ratio of the component to the compound being in the range 0.001 to 1 to 10 to 1. Either catalyst may be in two stages, and steam may be added to the gases between the stages of the first catalyst. The gases may be quenched with water before the first stage. Preferred alkali metal compounds are salts of K and Cs, including acetates, and components mentioned are V, Cr, Mo, W, Fe, Ni, Co alone, and mixtures of Fe, Ni or Co with V, Cr, Mo or W. The metals may be supported, e.g. on alumina, silica, a zeolite, activated carbon, coconut charcoal, silicon carbide. In a specific example, an α-alumina support has a surface area of 5 sq. inch per gm.
