Abstract
Traces of CO present as impurity in a H2-containing gas are selectively oxidised by contacting the H2-containing gas, in the presence of an amount of O2 in excess of that stoichiometrically required for complete oxidation of the CO, with a supported platinum, rhodium, or ruthenium catalyst at 110-200 DEG C. The O2 to CO molar ratio should be 1:1 to 3:1 at 120-160 DEG C. The catalyst contains 0.01-5% metal, including mixtures or alloys of the specified metals, on such supports as alumina, silica, kieselguhr, silica gel, or diatomaceous earth, as powder, pellets, or grains. Space velocities of 500-100,000 V/V/hr. are used with hydrogen or hydrogen and nitrogen mixtures containing 0.01-2% CO.
