Abstract

A process for activating a noble metal containing catalyst (noble metal is defined as Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, Os or Ir) comprises oxidizing the catalyst at temperatures between 100 and 1000 DEG C. in a first gaseous oxidizing medium containing air and chlorine and then in a second gaseous oxidizing medium containing air and chlorine in a quantity of from 0,001-2,0 mol per cent, the molar ratio of chlorine in the first medium to that in the second medium being within the range of from 2 : 1 to 210 : 1, the chlorine content of the catalyst being lowered following the first treatment such that it finally contains 0,1-1,0% of combined chlorine. Additionally the catalyst may contain one or more of Cu, V, Cr, Ni, W, Ag, Mn, Fe, Co, Re and Mo.
