Abstract

1,229,858. Dissociation of HH 3 . GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 19 July, 1968 [27 July, 1967]. No. 34602/68. Heading C1A. In a process for dissociating NH 3 into N 2 and H 2 by passage over a Pt group metal or alloy catalyst, the reaction is initiated by heating the catalyst, and thereafter is sustained, without external heating, by mixing 5-21 wt. per cent O 2 (based on 0 2 +NH 3 ) with the NH 3 so that a fraction of the NH 3 reacts exothermally with the O 2 to supply the required heat, and the remaining NH 3 is dissociated. The catalyst may be Ir, Pt, Rh, Ru or Pd, or an alloy of Ir with Pt, Ti, Ta, Fe or Ni. It may be unsupported, e.g. as powder, rods, balls, wires or screen, or may be supported on pellets of A1 2 O 3 , carbon, metal, silica, pumice or zeolite. The pellets may be impregnated with a solution, e.g. of IrC1 3 , (NH 4 ) 2 IrCl 6 , or Na 2 IrCl 6 , and reduced at 500‹ C. The dissociation is effected at a temperature below 500‹ C., e.g. 367‹ or 380‹ C.
