Abstract
A carbon electrode is impregnated with a metal catalyst selected from Pt, Ir, Au, Pd, Rh, Ru, alloys of two or more of these, or alloys of one or more with Re or Ag, and wherein the catalyst comprises at least 0.1 wt. per cent of the complete electrode, by soaking the carbon structure having oxygen chemically combined on its surface, in an aqueous solution of a water-soluble compound containing the metals, heating the structure in the presence of carbon monoxide at 600-900 DEG F. for 30 minutes to 4 hours (by which the oxygen chemically combined with the surface of the carbon structure is removed) and subsequently heating in hydrogen at 1000-1800 DEG F. until the compound is reduced to a metal.
