Abstract

In a process of making a sintered body comprising a metal matrix and a dispensed non metallic refractory phase, a green isostatically pressed porous compact of the metal is impregnated with a liquid which forms the refractory phase, the impregnated compact is heated to convert the liquid to the refractory phase and the compact is finally sintered. The refractory phase which forms 0.2 to 2% by weight of the body may be Al2O3, ThO2, YtO2, TiN or C an the metal matrix may be Pt, 90Pt/10Rh, Ag, Ni, Cu or steel. The minus 200 mesh metal powder is pressed isostatically at 5-30 p.s.i. and after evacuation is vacuum impregnated with a nitrate or formate solution of Al, Th or Yt to form the oxide, or with an aqueous suspension of TiN or with a sucrose solution or a styrene solution containing dibenzoyl peroxide to form a dispensed carbon phase. The impregnated compacts are heated to form the refractory phase and then sintered in argon at 1400 DEG C for Pt, 1100 DEG C for steel. The sintered compact is finally swaged annealed and drawn the Pt - oxide compacts being used as thermocouple wires.
