Abstract

1,224,565. Dissociation of NH 3 . GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 29 April, 1968 [1 June, 1967], No. 20196/68. Heading C1A. NH 3 is dissociated into N 2 and H 2 by passing the NH 3 over a catalyst of Ir or an Ir alloy heated to 465‹ C. or below. The alloy may be Ir with Pt, Ti, Ta, Fe, or Ni. The catalyst may be unsupported, e.g. as powder, rods, balls, wires, or screen, or may be supported on pellets of Al 2 O 3 , carbon, silica, pumice, zeolite, diatomaceous earth, or metal. The pellets may be impregnated with a solution of IrCl 3 , (NH 4 ) 2 IrCl 6 or Na 2 IrCl 6 , and reduced at 500‹ C. In examples the dissociation was effected at 127-353‹ C.
