Abstract

Acyclic dicarboxylic acid nitriles are prepared by treating a 1,2-dicyanocycloalkane in the vapour phase with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst. The reaction may be at between 150 DEG C. and 450 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure, and the compound is preferably vapourised and passed with hydrogen into the reaction zone. Copper, nickel and cobalt chromite, reduced nickel or cobalt oxides, and rhodium and palladium may be used as catalysts and the preparation of adiponitrile from 1,2-dicyanocyclobutane is described.
