Abstract
Delta 3-tetrahydrobenzyl alcohol and its homologues, including the 2,5-endomethylene compound, are produced by hydrogenation of delta 3-tetrahydrobenzaldehyde, or the appropriate homologue, in the presence of a copperchromium oxide catalyst. In example, a solution of tetrahydrobenzaldehyde in cyclohexane, to which copper chromite is added, is shaken in an autoclave under hydrogen at a pressure of 70 to 200 atmospheres at 125 DEG C. The product is tetrahydrobenzyl alcohol which contains only a small percentage of hexahydrobenzyl alcohol. Examples 4 and 5 describe the production of 6-methyl-D 3-tetrahydrobenzaldehyde and 2,5-endomethylene-D 3-tetrahydrobenzaldehyde, respectively.
