Abstract

Nickel catalysts activated with an alkali-metal oxide and supported on a carrier, e.g. kieselguhr or silica gel, are used for the hydrogenation of 1:2-dicyanobutane to adiponitrile. The catalyst may be prepared by impregnating natural kieselguhr with an aqueous soultion of nickelous chloride, treating at 70 DEG -80 DEG C. with a sodium carbonate solution, drying and reducing with hydrogen at 350 DEG C. Ferric, aluminium, potassium and sodium oxides are present with the nickel and silicon dioxide. Hydrogenation of adiponitrile to hexamethylene diamine may be effected in the presence of Raney cobalt.ALSO:Adiponitrile is prepared by treating 1 : 2-dicyanobutane, dissolved in a polar organic solvent, with hydrogen at a temperature between 200 and 400 DEG C., under a pressure above 100 atmospheres, in the presence of a nickel catalyst activated with an alkali metal oxide and supported on a carrier. The reaction mixture is in the form of a solution and dioxan is preferred as the solvent. The catalyst carrier may be kieselguhr or silica gel, and a nickel catalyst containing metal oxides prepared by impregnating kieselguhr with aqueous nickelous chloride, treating with sodium carbonate, drying and reducing with hydrogen at about 350 DEG C., is used in examples. The product may be further reduced in a second stage, e.g. in the presence of Raney cobalt, to hexamethylene diamine. Specifications 900,356 and 900,358 are referred to.
