a - Hydroxy - e - aminocaproic acid is prepared by passing oxygen or oxygen-containing gas through water or an aqueous medium containing 2,3 - dihydropyran - 2 - carboxaldehyde or a product formed by reaction of such carboxaldehyde with water, and subsequently aminating the oxidation product in the aqueous medium by means of ammonia and in the presence of hydrogen and a hydrogenation catalyst.
