Abstract
Hydroxylamine is produced by the reduction of aqueous nitric acid, e.g. up to 40 per cent acid, with hydrogen in the presence of rhodium as catalyst. The catalyst may be supported on an acid insoluble carrier, e.g. activated carbon, alumina, asbestos, silica gel, quartz, heat and chemical resistant glass, or kieselguhr. The carrier may be in powdered granular or pellet form, 5 per cent rhodium on active carbon is preferred. An additional acid (except hydrochloric acid) may be present, e.g. formic, acetic, phosphoric or sulphuric acid. The mole ratio of sulphuric acid to nitric acid may be between 0.5 and 4 to 1. The aqueous nitric acid may contain methanol. In the absence of additional acid the maximum concentration of nitric acid is 24.5 per cent at 50 p.s.i.g. and room temperature, and 40 per cent at 0 DEG C. Pressures of up to 4500 psig may be employed. Using sulphuric acid pressures of 0-500 psig are preferred. Room or cooling water temperature is preferably employed, but a temperature of up to 125 DEG C. may be employed.
