Abstract

Unsymmetrical dialkylhydrazines are prepared by reacting hydrogen at superatmospheric pressure with the corresponding dialkylnitrosamine in the presence of a nickel, copper chromite or palladium hydrogenation catalyst. Reaction temperatures of 0 DEG to 100 DEG C. are suitable for the nickel or palladium catalysts and those from 0 DEG to 175 DEG C. are suitable for the copper chromite catalyst. Raney nickel and palladium supported on alumina are preferred forms of the nickel and palladium catalysts, respectively. Preferred hydrogen pressures are between 1200 and 2000 p.s.i.g. The reaction may be carried out with or without aqueous or non-aqueous solvents. For continuous working a dialkylnitrosoamine is made to flow downwards through a catalyst bed contained in a vertically arranged cylindrical vessel, in which suitable superatmospheric hydrogen pressures are maintained; unreacted hydrogen and dialkylnitrosamine are separated from the dialkylhydrazine and are recycled. The examples describe the preparation of dimethylhydrazine, methylethylhydrazine, diethylhydrazine, di-n-propylhydrazine and di-n-butylhydrazine.
