Abstract

Citronellol is made by contacting geraniol with hydrogen at superatmospheric pressure in the presence of a cobalt catalyst until the amount of hydrogen absorbed corresponds to the saturation of one of the double bonds. Preferred are Raney cobalt, 25-200 DEG C. 3.4 to 34 ats. In the example a minor amount of dimethyl octanol accompanying the product has been found, whereas by comparison Raney nickel or palladium produced considerable amounts.
