Abstract

A saturated aliphatic-ketone and a secondary alcohol are produced when the vapour of an unsaturated ketone and hydrogen react in the presence of a supported copper/nickel catalyst in the temperature 130-300 DEG C. Alternatively the reaction may be carried out in the presence of a supported copper catalyst followed by reaction of the product with more hydrogen in the presence of the copper/nickel catalyst both steps being carried out in the above temperature range. The supported copper and copper/nickel catalysts may contain 25-90% catalyst based on the total weight of catalyst and support the proportion of copper to nickel in the copper nickel catalyst being preferably 5:1 to 20:1. The reaction may take place at atmospheric pressure or above. Higher pressures and lower temperatures tend to give increased alkanol production. By this method mesityl oxide may be converted to methyl isobutyl ketone and methyl isobutyl carbinol, and ethylidene acetone may be converted to methyl propyl ketone and methyl propyl carbinol.
