Abstract

A saturated aliphatic ketone is obtained by hydrogenating with molecular hydrogen an a :b -ethylenically unsaturated ketone in the vapour phase at a temperature in the range 100-300 DEG C. in the presence of a supported palladium catalyst. The catalyst may contain 0.1-2.0 per cent palladium, which is supported on a - or g -alumina, silica gel, "Carborundum" (Registered Trade Mark), charcoal, pumice or kieselguhr. As starting materials there may be used methyl vinyl ketone, ethylidene acetone, methyl isopropenyl ketone, mesityl oxide, isobutylidene acetone and hept-2-en-4-one.
