Abstract

Dihydropyrans are hydrogenated to tetrahydropyran by treatment in the vapour phase with hydrogen at raised temperature in presence of a hydrogenating catalyst, e.g. a metal of the 8th Group (iron, nickel or cobalt) at 100-300 DEG , or metals of Group I at a higher temperature. In an example, 1 : 2-dihydropyran is hydrogenated at 230 DEG using a nickel catalyst on pumice.
