Abstract

In a process for the production of 1.3-butylene glycol by subjecting acetaldehyde to aldol condensation and hydrogenating the acetaldol obtained, the aldol condensation is stopped before the percentage conversion of acetaldehyde exceeds 44% and unconverted acetaldehyde is steam distilled from the aldol condensation product after the alkaline substances present have been substantially neutralised. The aldol condensation is carried out in the usual way using alkaline catalysts such as sodium and potassium hydroxides and carbonates to maintain the pH of the mixture between 9 and 12. The aldol condensation may be satisfactorily carried out at a temperature of 0-50 DEG C. The condensation reaction is stopped by neutralising the mixture with an acid, e.g. phosphoric, acetic or sulphuric acid. The unconverted acetaldehyde is steam stripped from the mixture and the acetaldol is hydrogenated, e.g. by passing over a Raney metal catalyst at 25-65 DEG C. or higher.
