Abstract

a ,b -Unsaturated aldehydes are converted into the corresponding alcohols in a process which comprises preparing an aqueous alkaline homogeneous single phase system containing the a ,b -unsaturated aldehyde and formaldehyde, allowing the a ,b -unsaturated aldehyde and formaldehyde to react therein and thereafter recovering the a ,b -unsaturated alcohol. The reaction temperature range is 5 DEG -75 DEG C. and as solvents there may be employed methanol, isopropanol, dioxane, acetonitrile or formamide. Suitable aldehydes are vitamin A aldehyde, b -ionylidene acetaldehyde, a -ionylidene acetaldehyde and a -vitamin A aldehyde.
