Abstract

Polyvinyl acetals are prepared by reacting a suitable polyvinyl compound with an aldehyde in the presence of sulphuric acid to obtain an acidic solution of the acetal, and neutralizing the acidity of the solution by adding magnesium acetate thereto. The acetal may be prepared by reacting polyvinyl alcohol or an ester, e.g. the acetate or propionate, with such aldehydes as propionaldehyde or butyraldehyde. Preferably polyvinyl acetate is reacted with butyraldehyde in methanol solution at a pressure of at least 1.5 atmospheres and a temperature of at least 70 DEG C. using 2.5-30 parts of sulphuric acid per 100 parts of polyvinyl acetate.
