Abstract
Glycerol is produced by reacting allyl alcohol with peracetic acid in an acid aqueous solution in the absence of catalysts at a temperature of 30-90 DEG C. in the presence of acids having a dissociation constant of not more than 2 X 10-5 at normal temperature. Preferably the acid used is acetic acid and accordingly peracetic acid which has been prepared by the oxidation of acetic acid and which contains some unchanged acetic acid may be used.
