Abstract
3,3-Dialkylalkanoic acids (containing at least 10 C) are prepared by heating a 1,1-dialkyl-4-(31-oxoalkyl) cyclohexane-3,5-dione (the 31-oxoalkyl radical containing not less than 3 C) with hydrazine in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide and an organic hydroxylic solvent to give an alkali metal salt of 3,3-dialkyl-5,9-dioxoalkanoic acid dihydrazone, heating to 180 DEG to 250 DEG C. to convert to the alkali metal salt of the 3,3-dialkylalkanoic acid and acidifying. 31-oxobutyl, 31-oxotetradecyl, 31-oxotetrapentyl and 31-oxotetracontyl are mentioned as suitable radicals and octyl alcohol, mono-, di-, and tri-ethylene glycol and glycerol may be the hydroxylic solvents. Examples describe the preparation of 3,3-dimethyldecanoic, 3,3-dimethylundecanoic, and 3,3-dimethyleicosanic acids. The 1,1-dialkyl-4-(31-oxoalkyl) cyclohexane-3, 5-dione may be prepared by contacting a 1,1-dialkylcyclohexane-3,5-dione with an alkyl vinyl ketone or a 2-chloroethyl alkyl ketone in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide or a trialkylamine and examples are given.
