Abstract

The invention comprises cycloundecanecarboxylic acid and esters thereof and a process for the preparation of the acid which comprises reacting a 2-halogeno-cyclododecanone with an alkali metal hydroxide which is dissolved in an alcohol or mixture of water and a water-miscible solvent for the halogenocyclododecanone and acidifying the reaction mass. Alcohols specified include ethanol and propanol and water miscible organic solvents specified include dioxan, tetranydrofuran and methylol. The examples relate to the preparation of cycloundecanecarboxyiic acid and the methyl and ethyl esters. 2-Bromocyclododecanone is obtained by brominating cyclododecanone in ether solution. 2-chlorocyclododecanone is obtained in a similar manner.
