The invention comprises an a -b -unsaturated aldehyde, 2 - methyl - 4 - acetoxy - 2 - butenal, of formula <FORM:0736488/IV (b)/1> It may be prepared by reacting hexamethylenetetramine with 1-chloro-2-methyl-4-acetoxy-2-butene to obtain a complex which is hydrolysed to give the required aldehyde.
