Abstract
Monocarboxylic acids are obtained from vanillin, o-vanillin or syringaldehyde by boiling with an aqueous solution of mercuric oxide in sodium hydroxide, acidifying, boiling again to decompose the complex mercury compounds, filtering whilst hot to separate the acid and the unreacted aldehyde in the filtrate from the mercury in the precipitate, and cooling the filtrate to separate the acid therefrom. A detailed example is given.
