Abstract

Heavy metal compounds of thiocarbohydrates are prepared by treating the alkali or alkalineearth metal compounds with heavy metal salts. Examples are given of the treatment of sodium 1-thioglucose with potassium auribromide, antimony trichloride or bismuth trichloride, potassium thiocellobiose with antimony tribromide, sodium thiocellobiose with potassium auribromide, and potassium 1-thiogalactose with silver nitrate; the products separate out immediately from the aqueous or glycol solution or on addition of alcohol or acid. The alkali and alkaline-earth metal compounds of thiocellobiose are obtained by heating octa-acetylthiocellobiose with the corresponding alcoholate.
