Abstract

5 - Alkyl - 5 - (11,21 - dibrom - 21 - phenylethyl)-hydantoin is prepared by brominating a 5-alkyl-5-styrylhydantoin, if desired in the presence of a solvent such as glacial acetic acid. The products may be converted to water-soluble salts by treatment with an alkali or magnesium hydroxide. Examples are given of the preparation of 5-methyl-, 5-ethyl- and 5 - propyl - 5 - (11,21 - dibrom - 21 - phenylethyl)-hydantoin.
