Abstract

Anhydro-corticosterones and esters thereof are obtained by reacting D 4 : 9- or D 4 : 11-3-ketoaetio-choladienic acid halide with diazo-methane and converting the resulting diazo-ketone or halogen-ketone into the corresponding oxyketone by the action of a hydrolysing agent or into an ester by the action of an organic or inorganic acid or a salt thereof. As hydrolysing agent there may be used water or dilute acid, e.g. sulphuric acid or an organic sulphonic acid such as methane sulphonic acid. Esters may be formed with acetic, propionic, butyric, crotonic, palmitic, benzoic, phenylacetic, hydrochloric, hydrobromic, hydroiodic, phosphoric and boric acids. Detailed examples are given.
