Abstract

2,3,4,5-Tetrachlorophenol is prepared by diazotising 2,3,4,5-tetrachloroanthranilic acid or a salt or ester thereof and subsequently converting the diazo radical in the diazonium salt thereby obtained into the hydroxy radical. The carboxylic group is also removed in the latter step. The diazotisation may be carried out with the usual metallic nitrites, alkyl nitrites, nitrosyl halides, e.g. the chloride, nitrosyl sulphuric acid or dinitrogen trioxide and in the presence of such acids as sulphuric, phosphoric and hydrochloric acids and acetic acid. The conversion of the diazo group to a phenolic group is carried out by heating with an aqueous medium. Examples are furnished.
