Abstract

The invention comprises 2,4-dichlorobenzothiazole; its production by diazotising 2-amino-4-chlorobenzothiazole in hydrochloric acid; its conversion into 4-chloro-2-hydroxybenzothiazole, e.g. by hydrolysis with alcoholic hydrochloric acid or by reaction with an alkali metal alkoxide followed by hydrolysis of the 4-chloro-2-alkoxy-benzothiazole; and the production of 4-chloro-2-oxobenzothiazolin-3-ylacetic acid or a salt or ester thereof from the 4-chloro-2-hydroxybenzothiazole so obtained, by the methods of Specification 862,226.
