A process for the preparation of 4-(2<SP>1</SP>,6<SP>1</SP>,6<SP>1</SP>- trimethylcyclohexene-1<SP>1</SP>-yl)-2-methylbutene-2- al-1 comprises reacting #-ionone with an ester of chloroacetic acid in the presence of an organic base and an alkali metal alkoxide having from 3 to 6 carbon atoms to form the condensation product of said #-ionone and said ester; saponifying said condensation product with an aqueous alkali and thereafter adding water to the saponified product. Examples are furnished.
