Abstract

Azo dyestuffs are made by coupling an ortho-hydroxy diazo compound of the benzene series with 2-aminonaphthalene-1-sulphonic acid. During the coupling the 1-sulphonic acid group is split off. Reaction may be effected in a medium of pH 2-8 and the presence of naphthalene-1-sulphonic acid is sometimes an advantage. In examples (1) 2-amino-6-nitro-phenol-4-sulphonic acid and (2) and (3) 2-amino-5-nitrophenyl are diazotized and coupled with 2-aminonaphthalene-1-sulphonic acid to give dyestuffs in which the 1-sulphonic acid group has been removed the coupling of (1) and (2) being effected in the presence of naphthalene-1-sulphonic acid.
