Abstract

Beta-lactones of formula <FORM:0872155/IV (b)/1> where R and R1 are the same of different and represent hydrogen, aryl, alkyl or aralkyl groups are prepared by mixing a beta-aminopropionic acid of formula <FORM:0872155/IV (b)/2> with 2 to 3 equivalents of an alkali metal nitrite in dilute acetic acid at a temperature not exceeding 5 DEG C. Those compounds in which R is C1-8 alkyl or aralkyl and R1 is aryl or aralkyl are claimed per se. The lactones may be hydrolysed, e.g. with sodium hydroxide to the corresponding hydroxy acids <FORM:0872155/IV (b)/3> Specifications 709,585 and 853,954 are referred to.
