Abstract
2 - (41 - Carboxy - butylidene) - 3 : 4 - di - (acyl - amido)-tetrahydrothiophene esters and their equilibrants, 2 - (41 - carboxybutyl) - 3 : 4 - di - acylamido)-4 : 5-dihydrothiophene esters of the general formul <FORM:0606193/IV(b)/1> and <FORM:0606193/IV(b)/2> wherein R and R1 are acyl groups and R11 is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or aralkyl are obtained as a mixture of equilibrants by treating an ester of 2 - (41 - carboxybutylidene) - 3 - isonitroso - 4 - acylamido-tetrahydrothiophene with an acylating-reducing agent, e.g. a mixture of zinc, a lower aliphatic acid and a lower aliphatic acid anhydride. In an example, 2-(41-carbomethoxybutylidene) - 3 - isonitroso - 4 - benzamido - tetrahydrothiophene is converted into a mixture of two stereoisomeric racemates of the 3-acetamido-compound with zinc, acetic acid and acetic anhydride. When saponified with warm alkali in aqueous alcohol, followed by acidification of the mixture, the corresponding acids are obtained. Other 4-acylamido substituents are acetamido and propionamido, whilst the ester group may be methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl or other lower alkyl, and phenyl, benzyl and other aryl or arylalkyl esters.
