Abstract
a - Hydroxy, b - mercapto - alkane carboxylic acids and salts thereof are obtained by reacting the corresponding a ,b -epoxyalkane carboxylic acid or a salt thereof with an inorganic hydrosulphide or a mixture of inorganic hydrosulphides. The term "inorganic hydrosulphide" is defined as hydrogen sulphide and its acid salts, particularly the alkali and alkaline earth metal salts. The reaction is suitably carried out by heating a salt of the appropriate epoxyalkane carboxylic acid, which may be in aqueous solution, with an excess of hydrogen sulphide in an autoclave for some hours preferably at a temperature between 90 DEG and 110 DEG C. An example is given for the preparation of a -hydroxy, b -mercaptopropionic acid. The products are useful as additives to poultry feeds.
