Abstract

[Also in Division C5] Monosodium C 10-22 fatty alpha-sulpho carboxylic acids are obtained by a process comprising: (a) mixing solutions (in a substantially inert solvent) of sulphur trioxide and appropriate fatty acid such that the sulphur trioxide is in molar excess; (b) maintaining the mixture at a temperature up to the boiling point of the mixture for a time sufficient for substantially complete reaction; (c) thereafter partially neutralizing the mixture by mixing it with an aqueous solution of caustic soda, the concentration of the caustic soda solution and the temperature during the neutralization being such that any disodium alpha-sulphocarboxylate formed during neutralization is not precipitated and ensuring that the final pH of the solution is in the range 2À5 to 4À5; (d) separating the solvent from the neutralized solution; (e) cooling the thus concentrated mixture to precipitate the crystalline monosodium compound; and (f) separating the precipitated crystals and washing these with water. A fatty acid of which at least 90% by weight is stearic or palmitic acid or a mixture thereof, e.g. commercial stearic acid or acids from hardened tallow, may be especially utilized in the process. The sulphonation of stearic acid affords a product comprising the corresponding monosodium alphasulpho-carboxylic acid and a small amount of disodium alpha - sulphocarboxylate, residual moisture, stearic acid and volatile matter.
