Abstract
2-Carbalkoxy-3-keto-4-acylamido-tetrahydrothiophenes and their 2-alkali metal and 2-alkaline earth metal derivatives of the formula <FORM:0606189/IV(b)/1> wherein R is an acyl group, R1 is an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group and X is hydrogen, an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal are obtained by treating a 2-acylamido-3-carboxymethylmercaptopropanoic di-ester, preferably in an aliphatic alcoholic reaction medium, with an alkali metal alcoholate or an alkaline earth metal alcoholate. Upon treating the metal derivative thus obtained with dilute acid at room temperature (30 DEG C.) or below, the corresponding free ester can be obtained. By treating either the metal derivative or the free ester with reagents showing reactivity towards the keto group other derivatives are produced, e.g. the oxime, aryl hydrazone, semi-carbazone and simple keto-addition products. In an example, the 2-sodium derivative of 2-carbomethoxy-3-keto-4-benzamido-tetrahydrothiophene is produced, from which is obtained the oxime and the phenyl hydrazone after hydrolysis to the ester whilst the semi-carbazide and nitrophenylhydrazone may be produced directly from the metal derivative.
