Abstract

6-Acylamino-penicillanic acids are produced by reacting 6-amino-penicillanic acid in an aqueous medium with a carboxylic acid or a salt or derivative thereof at a pH of not more than 6.5, in the presence of bacteria or extracts, enzymes or enzyme concentrates obtained from these bacteria which are capable of linking phenylacetic acid in an amide-like manner with the 6-positioned amino group of 6-amino penicillanic acid with the liberation of water, such as E. coli A.T.C.C. 11,105. The 6-amino-penicillanic acid may be used in the form of a crude solution obtained by the action on penicillins of suspentions or extracts of penicillin-splitting bacteria.
