Abstract
Unsubstituted or a ,a 1-substituted b ,b 1-thiodipropionic acids are prepared by reacting an unsubstituted or a -substituted a ,b -unsaturated aliphatic acid in aqueous solution with an alkali metal sulphide and acidifying to liberate the acids. In the example, aqueous acrylic acid was added to sodium sulphide, excess sulphide being added near the end of the reaction to ensure alkaline conditions. On completion of the reaction, the mixture was acidified to obtain the free acid. Other a -substituted a ,b -unsaturated acids such as methacrylic and ethacrylic may be used. The b ,b 1-thiodipropionic acids may be used in organic syntheses and as rubber plasticizers in the form of their esters.
