Abstract

Thioindigo dyes are obtained by oxidation of 4-halogenhydroxythionaphthenes, which are prepared in known manner from 3-halogenphenyl-1-thioglycollic acids containing in the 2-position, a carboxy, a carboxyamide or a nitrile group. In p an example, 3-chlorphenyl-1-thioglycollic-2-carboxylic acid is refluxed with acetic anhydride and anhydrous sodium acetate, and the resulting 4 - chlor - acetyloxythionaphthene saponified and finally oxidized. 3-Halogen-1-thioglycollic acids containing in the 2-position a carboxy or a nitrile group are prepared in known manner from the corresponding 3-halogen-1-aminobenzenes. The 3-halogen-2-carboxyamido-1-thioglycollic acids are prepared by saponifying e.g. with dilute sulphuric acid, the corresponding thioglycollic acids containing a nitrile group in the 2-position. 3-Chlorphenyl-1-thioglycollic-2-carboxylic acid is obtained by diazotizing 6-chlor-2-amino-1-benzoic acid, converting the product into the xanthic ester, and condensing with chloracetic acid the mercaptan which is obtained by saponification with alkali.
